Thank you!

Thank you for another great year! We saw some of the best snow conditions in recent memory at both Sunday River and Jay Peak. We hope everyone had a wonderful vacation!

We will be updating our photos on the site and sharing some to our Facebook page, please feel free to share some of your own!

Miscellaneous Updates

Sunday River:

Hopefully you won’t need this information, but if you are in need of car repairs while at the resort: we had work done at the Savage Auto service center in Bethel last year and they were very helpful.

We have updated the website to include a weather page to pull together a number of locations that may be helpful at a glance while you are travelling and looking ahead to the trip. This page can be found by clicking here or can be found under the General Info drop-down in the main menu.

Below are our most used page links; be sure to check them out if you are looking for information:

Remember, there is a lot of valuable information to be found from the pages on the top menu bar (or by clicking the top left menu button if you are visiting us on mobile)! The information is mainly based on questions we have been asked over the years. If you have anything you would like us to add, please let us know.

Hill Conditions

Bluebird morning

Sunday River has been receiving a lot of snow of late, and if anyone has not been following them on social media you may have missed the updates.

There are a total of 133 trails open today, with 24 inches of new snow in the last 10 days and 6 feet of snow in February!

The mountain report from earlier in the week said it best “You couldn’t ask for better conditions than these.” Fingers are crossed these conditions continue into March and we could be in for some wonderful times spent on the hill.

A Typical Week

We have had a couple of questions regarding what a ‘typical’ trip to Sunday River looks like as a whole; aside from just the skiing. Here is an example run down of the whole week based on our experiences along with input from some of our group members. This is a long post but we wanted to give as many details as possible for your benefit!

Our example leaves from Halifax, NS first thing Saturday morning; with about a 5 hour drive straight to the border crossing at Woodstock, NB. As mentioned in our FAQs, we prefer the stretch of New Brunswick highway to the Woodstock/Houlton border crossing vs the stretch to Saint Stephen/Calais. Pack car snacks and you can make it to the border without stopping for lunch; no guarantees on the number of stops for gas or bathroom breaks! It helps to leave as early as you can; our experience has been that if you hit the border too late in the afternoon you can expect lineups at the crossing (~ 1 hour).

Let’s Talk About Food

But first, we wanted to mention that we are having some difficulties with the 1-800 phone number for the Best Western Freeport Inn. Please call 1-207-865-3106 for reservations, more details under our FAQ Section. ** Update: 1-800-242-8838 should be working again.

Those of you following us on Facebook may have noticed we recently shared an article about new places to eat in Bethel. Got us thinking we should do a full post on the subject.

Although the rooms at Sunday River include kitchenette amenities, it is always nice to know your options for a meal out in the area, and even some tips for lunches.

Two Months Away

We are now approximately two months away from our ski trips with the first week group hitting the slopes in only 57 days!

If you are planning on staying at Country Inn at the Mall (Bangor) or the Best Western Plus Freeport Inn (Freeport) as part of your travels, don’t forget to call and book using the Duggan Ski Group discounts! All of the information is here on our website under the FAQ section of Where can I stay along the way?

Check out some of the other information as well under the FAQ and Information links in preparation for the trips.

Sunday River is currently boasting the most open terrain on the east coast with 106 trails open. They have received 9 new inches of snow in the past 5 days, with an average base depth of 32 inches of snow.

We are getting pretty excited! Hope everyone in the Nova Scotia region is staying warm tonight for the snow storm. We have our storm chips ready  🙂

Openings and Open Houses

Hard to believe with the warm temperatures we have been seeing in Halifax, but Sunday River has announced their planned opening day – November 23rd! They are planning on top-to-bottom skiing on both Aurora and Barker mountains.

Also, this Saturday is the Open House at Ski Wentworth. Saturday, November 19th from 10 am – 2pm, they have quite a few things planned:

  • Canadian Ski Patrol Ski Swap & Sale:
A portion of all sales go to the Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Rental Shop Ski & Boot Inventory Sell Out:
Ski Wentworth bought all new HEAD skis & boots for the 2016-17 season. That means great deals on their existing ski & boot rental fleet. $50 will give you a pair of skis, plus two pairs of boots. Great idea if you were thinking of renting gear this year, or even to get two different size boots for the kids as they grow. Note, the $50 does not include poles but your bindings are included!
  • Dave Wilson’s Ski Shop:
All the latest Ski Wentworth logo wear, gloves, mitts, helmets and more!
  • Season Pass “NO HST” Sale:
Your final chance to save on a season pass. Must come to the Open House to get the deal. Pick up your season pass for the 2016-17 season!
  • Lodge Sale:
Great deals on equipment from Cleve’s, Aerobics First, Entity, HAF and Hub Cycle. Plus, see all the latest gear from major equipment suppliers.
  • Snow School Programs:
Sign up for snow school programs, Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Leagues.
  • Craft & Food Sale:
Local crafts, wreaths, yummy treats and more.

Find the full details on their facebook page.

March 2017

Hard to believe, but we are already thinking about the next ski season! We are making arrangements for the following dates:

  • March 5 – 10, 2017 (four day option also available, March 5 – 9 or March 6 – 10)
  • March 12 – 17, 2017

We hope that you will return to Sunday River with us this year, and have friends that may want to join you.

Prices are very comparable to last year; if you would like a quote please send me an email at with the number in your party. Include the ages of any children at the time of the trip, and if you are 65 & up you get a discount as well.

Sunday River is also thinking about the upcoming season already; they are planning to install a new three-person chairlift on Spruce Peak.

Hope you are enjoying the summer!

Snow Guarantee

Today we saw slushy conditions at the hill and wanted to remind everyone of the snow guarantee. Each morning you are able to go out for a couple of runs to test the conditions and as long as you return your lift pass (here at the hotel front desk, or at the south ridge lodge) before 10 am you will receive a voucher to use next year if you return with the group.

Drive safe and see you on Sunday. Don’t forget about the wine and cheese, Monday evening 5 – 7 pm at the Summit.
