Getting Closer!

Anyone planning to stay a night or two at the Best Western Freeport Inn may be interested in looking at a Groupon deal for the Muddy Rudder; the restaurant just on the other side of the river from the Inn. There are two options, $29 for $50 credit or $55 for $100 credit. See all of the details and fine print here.  Thanks for the tip, Barb 🙂

Like many of you, we also have been curious on what the access is like to Spruce Peak now that the three person chair lift normally servicing this area of the mountain is not running. There was an excellent post recently put up by the hill, on their The First Chair site. It gives the best account we have read so far of reaching the Spruce Peak runs, explaining you can cover about 1/3 of the way by keeping your speed from Borealis, and then either popping off your skis to walk or skate the rest of the way (“about 100 – 150 yds of moderate incline”).

We recently had this link on our Facebook page, but it was too good not to share again. Yesterday there was an update on the March weather to come, from Sunday River’s forecaster. He said “There’s still plenty of winter left, and I really like what I’m seeing in the modeling. March historically bring us some very wintry weather – especially the first two to three weeks of the month.”  Thanks for posting this for us, Paul.

Hard to believe but the first group will be on the Hill Sunday! We will plan to post pictures while we are on the hill next week, and please share any you have as well!

Hill Conditions

Bluebird morning

Sunday River has been receiving a lot of snow of late, and if anyone has not been following them on social media you may have missed the updates.

There are a total of 133 trails open today, with 24 inches of new snow in the last 10 days and 6 feet of snow in February!

The mountain report from earlier in the week said it best “You couldn’t ask for better conditions than these.” Fingers are crossed these conditions continue into March and we could be in for some wonderful times spent on the hill.

Two Months Away

We are now approximately two months away from our ski trips with the first week group hitting the slopes in only 57 days!

If you are planning on staying at Country Inn at the Mall (Bangor) or the Best Western Plus Freeport Inn (Freeport) as part of your travels, don’t forget to call and book using the Duggan Ski Group discounts! All of the information is here on our website under the FAQ section of Where can I stay along the way?

Check out some of the other information as well under the FAQ and Information links in preparation for the trips.

Sunday River is currently boasting the most open terrain on the east coast with 106 trails open. They have received 9 new inches of snow in the past 5 days, with an average base depth of 32 inches of snow.

We are getting pretty excited! Hope everyone in the Nova Scotia region is staying warm tonight for the snow storm. We have our storm chips ready  🙂

Openings and Open Houses

Hard to believe with the warm temperatures we have been seeing in Halifax, but Sunday River has announced their planned opening day – November 23rd! They are planning on top-to-bottom skiing on both Aurora and Barker mountains.

Also, this Saturday is the Open House at Ski Wentworth. Saturday, November 19th from 10 am – 2pm, they have quite a few things planned:

  • Canadian Ski Patrol Ski Swap & Sale:
A portion of all sales go to the Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Rental Shop Ski & Boot Inventory Sell Out:
Ski Wentworth bought all new HEAD skis & boots for the 2016-17 season. That means great deals on their existing ski & boot rental fleet. $50 will give you a pair of skis, plus two pairs of boots. Great idea if you were thinking of renting gear this year, or even to get two different size boots for the kids as they grow. Note, the $50 does not include poles but your bindings are included!
  • Dave Wilson’s Ski Shop:
All the latest Ski Wentworth logo wear, gloves, mitts, helmets and more!
  • Season Pass “NO HST” Sale:
Your final chance to save on a season pass. Must come to the Open House to get the deal. Pick up your season pass for the 2016-17 season!
  • Lodge Sale:
Great deals on equipment from Cleve’s, Aerobics First, Entity, HAF and Hub Cycle. Plus, see all the latest gear from major equipment suppliers.
  • Snow School Programs:
Sign up for snow school programs, Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Leagues.
  • Craft & Food Sale:
Local crafts, wreaths, yummy treats and more.

Find the full details on their facebook page.

Snow Guarantee

Today we saw slushy conditions at the hill and wanted to remind everyone of the snow guarantee. Each morning you are able to go out for a couple of runs to test the conditions and as long as you return your lift pass (here at the hotel front desk, or at the south ridge lodge) before 10 am you will receive a voucher to use next year if you return with the group.

Drive safe and see you on Sunday. Don’t forget about the wine and cheese, Monday evening 5 – 7 pm at the Summit.

Good News

We received word from Sunday River that they will be extending the 15% price discount until further notice. That is excellent news to help us with the current state of the Canadian Dollar!

Contact us soon to secure your spot on an upcoming trip.

They are currently seeing a lot of snow on the Hill; snowfall amounts earlier today were at 8 inches and counting.

Happy place found.

Happy Friday!

We are getting so close to the trip dates, it is hard to believe. Those of you on the March 15th trip will probably be packing up the car one month from today! Heading down for March 1? Only two more weekends between now and hitting the road.

Sunday River has still been getting lots of snow, with cold temperatures keeping it around. Looks like we are going to have a good March this year 🙂

These pictures were taken this week:

Pow. For. Days.

And here is the latest video from the hill:
